What exactly is an "AI label"?

Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Threads now add labels such as "AI info" or "Made with AI" to some posts. These labels usually are not applied by a human — they are triggered automatically when the platform reads signed metadata embedded inside the image file. The moment you upload, the platform inspects the hidden data in your file and decides whether to flag it as AI-related.

The catch is that even lightly edited images — or photos where an AI tool only cleaned up a background — can pick up the label. Once it is attached, it changes how your post is perceived and can even affect reach. That is why it helps to know exactly what is inside your image before you share it.

Your image file holds more than pixels

A photo file does not just store the visible picture. It also carries metadata, including:

• EXIF — the capture time, device model, exposure settings, and often GPS coordinates recorded by your camera or phone. This can reveal exactly where a photo was taken.
• IPTC / XMP — author, copyright, captions, and editing history written by editing software.
• Content Credentials (C2PA) — a modern standard that cryptographically signs "this image was generated or edited with a specific AI tool" directly into the file. It is a primary trigger for AI labels.
• ICC profiles / thumbnails — extra color and preview data that also add to file size.
